Buy this game. Now. Go on, I'll wait.
Sometimes, a game concept is so mind blowingly unique and flawlessly executed that game reviews everywhere stop to wonder at how a marvel squeaked through in a world of sequals and genere-clones. What concept could this be, you ask, that dominates all other ideas?
Rolling a ball.
Thats it. You play a tiny alien guy with the power to roll an ultra-sticky ball around on the ground. Using this sphere, you roll up thumbtacks, buttons, cats, small children, and basically everything you can see. As you roll, your Katamari grows in size and shape. Pick up irregular shapes, like fences, and it will be lopsided and get stuck to things.
Every time the sphere gets bigger, the level shifts to a different size. What looked like an insurmountable mountain of books may, after a bit of work, be like a bump in the road. Eventually you will enjoy the screams of the townsfolk as you roll your giant sphere of crap down the city streets in perfect Japanese monster movie style.
The concept and feel of this game is spot on. The sphere reacts to the environment and it's new additions just like, well, a giant sticky sphere should. The controls take some time getting used to, and there are a couple of cheap hits in the form of tiny enemies that come out of nowhere, but overall, excellent.
Presentation itself rocks, too. The into is fantastically strange, and the soundtrack is everything from techno to J-Pop to lounge acts. Dialouge is off-the-wall as well, a mixture between intentional bad translation and just plain weirdness. There are virtually no load times, and with tons and tons of objects to collect, bonus rounds and races, and a multiplayer with different selectable characters, there is no reason not to try this.
One final plus? It's only $20.
For combining brilliance and strangeness into one neat club, I give Katamari Damacy -
10/10
